Piles of boxes and other refuse in and around Saskatoon’s three recycling depots left them a disheveled mess on Boxing Day this year.
Lakewood, University Heights and Lawson Heights Recycling Depots featured full blue bins and piles of boxes and other packaging materials — recyclable and not — strewn about on the ground surrounding the bins.
In a statement from the city’s waste operations shared on Wednesday, the city says the need for additional pickup and cleanup at the recycling depots is anticipated post-Christmas “and we do plan accordingly.
“Sometimes, however, the level of activity and quantities accumulating at the depots still surpasses expectations,” the statement read.
The city has dedicated three trucks to clearing materials from the three recycling depots. The Lawson Heights Recycling Depot alone was cleaned twice on Dec. 27.
The statement goes on to explain that the city cannot enforce the flattening of cardboard by those who use the recycling depots, but the city’s waste department said it does encourage residents to do so, to ensure there is space for everyone’s recycling during peak drop-off times, like during the holidays.
The statement also encourages people using the depot bins to visit another location if one is full.
“This allows time for collections staff to keep up with the amount of dropped-off material,” the statement read.
Saskatoon residents can also bring their recycling to the Material Recovery Centre, which accepts items like electronics, metals and live Christmas trees.
Items like Styrofoam and garbage that are non-recyclable should be taken to the landfill directly.
The statement said depot use is “essentially self-policed,” but should illegal dumping be observed, it can be reported through the city website or by calling 306-975-2486.
“While depot use is essentially self-policed, if illegal dumping at depots is observied, it can be reported to the city through our website,” the statement ends
