The Estevan Police Service has come out with more information on what happened before a police officer was badly hurt inside the police station.
Around 6:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Estevan police got a call for a medical emergency about a woman who was hurt and bleeding. When police arrived at Apartment A at 1206 Sixth Street in Estevan, they found a woman with serious upper-body injuries.
Karie Ann Guillas, 46, was taken to hospital by EMS for care, but died at 9:30 a.m.
Estevan police have determined her death to be a murder. They have said that her injuries were consistent with a stabbing.
Officers arrested the suspect, Justice Guillas, at the apartment and took him to the Estevan police station.
There, what police are calling an “altercation” took place during processing that resulted in serious injuries to both the officer and the suspect.
STARS Ambulance transported both the officer and the suspect to a Regina hospital for treatment. The officer is said to be in stable condition, but no other update was offered.
Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has identified the situation as an officer-involved shooting. It has taken over the investigation between the officer and the suspect from Estevan police.
980 CJME has reached out to SIRT with questions relating to the shooting, and is expecting a response before the end of the week.
In a social media post, a family member of Guillas’ said she and the suspect are mother and son. The post also confirmed that he had died from his injuries.
Estevan police did not mention anything else about Justice Guillas other than he was an adult man.
