A longtime Saskatoon police officer could be throwing his hat into the ring for Saskatoon city council on Thursday.
Supt. Brian Shalovelo sent an email to media outlets on Tuesday, inviting reporters to an announcement in Ward 8, “regarding the upcoming Civic Election.”
Shalovelo is set to retire from the Saskatoon Police Service on Sept. 30, ending a 37-year career. During that time he served as a constable, sergeant, inspector and superintendent.
Ward 8 sits on Saskatoon’s east side, encompassing Brevoort Park, Brighton, East College Park, Greystone Heights, Holmwood and Briarwood.
Sarina Gersher is the current city councillor for the ward. She defeated Evan Drisner in the 2016 election by a 2,055 vote margin. The seat had been vacated by Eric Olauson, who was elected as a member of the provincial Sask. Party in 2016.
The website domain brianshalovelo.ca leads to a page with the message, “An exciting announcement is coming soon!”
The civic election is set for Nov. 9.
-Editors note: This is an amended version of the story. The original story had Sarina Gersher winning the 2016 election by a 1,055 vote margin when it was in fact 2,055.
