The Saskatchewan RCMP has asked the Prince Albert Police Service to investigate allegations of assault against a constable from the Battleford detachment.
In a media release Thursday, the RCMP said a 40-year-old man was arrested by a constable on May 14 after a public disturbance.
A second constable arrived and, while the man was handcuffed and lying on the ground, an altercation allegedly occurred between the second constable and the man.
“Internal and external complaints were made concerning the level of force used by the second constable during the altercation,” said the release, which noted the man didn’t report any injuries after the incident.
The Battleford RCMP reviewed the circumstances and, on Aug. 16, ordered that statutory and RCMP Code of Conduct investigations be done.
Under the RCMP Act, an external police force will be asked to investigate if it’s determined that the actions of a member may have broken federal or provincial laws. As a result, the Prince Albert police is to investigate the incident.
As well, the RCMP will do a Code of Conduct investigation into allegations of excessive use of force.
While the two investigations are underway, the constable has been suspended with pay.
