The City of Warman has begun work expanding the Warman Home Centre Communiplex arena in order to add a third sheet of ice.
The $15.1 million project is being funded by donations and the city in an effort to help attempt to address the high demand for ice time in Saskatchewan’s fastest-growing city.
The new sheet of ice feature have seating for 205 spectators and will see the second-floor lounge expanded with 150 more seats. The new ice sheet will also feature six dressing rooms and storage for everything needed to keep a hockey rink running year-round.
“It’s very exciting,” said Mayor Gary Philipchuk. “The goal is to have it all ready for summer 2025, for the 2025 hockey season.”
The facility was initially built in 2011 with plans to expand if the community continued to grow.

Philipchuk said the hockey community in Warman has grown significantly in the past decade, especially with the addition of a AAA program along with the success of the local female hockey program.
“All of our programs have really invited all these young people to our community and now they’re excelling at the sports they’re involved in,” Philipchuk added.
According to the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority, the Communiplex contributes $14.22 million to the local economy each year because of the number of people who use the facility for all different types of sports and tournaments.
With expansion of the facility now underway, Philipchuk said the city can soon start to look at ways to improve other recreation options in the city.
