Trial delayed for woman accused of THC-impaired driving causing death

The trial of a 29-year-old Saskatoon woman accused of impaired driving causing death has been adjourned until later this year.

Taylor Ashley Kennedy is charged with impaired driving while impaired by THC, causing the death of nine-year-old Baeleigh Maurice.

The trial was set to resume Monday, but was delayed until April 17 to give both the Crown and defence more time to work on their cases.

Maurice was on her way to school on Sept. 9, 2021 and was crossing at a marked crosswalk when she was allegedly hit and killed while Kennedy was behind the wheel.

Last October, the trial was adjourned to give the Crown more time to call other potential witnesses.

The trial is currently waiting for the judge to rule on whether or not statements Kennedy gave to police before she was arrested are admissible as evidence.

After the collision, Kennedy told police she had consumed magic mushrooms and marijuana the day before. That prompted police to give her a THC saliva test.

After the results turned up positive, Kennedy was arrested. The defence is alleging that Kennedy’s right against self-incrimination was breached.
