The University of Regina is on track for record enrolment in its winter semester.
According to the university, 16,200 students were registered on the first day of the 2024 winter term, a jump of 1,316 over last year’s numbers and beating the 2021 record of 15,840 by 360 students.
International students make up more than a quarter of the school’s enrolment, the university noted, while 18 per cent of the school’s domestic learners have self-identified as Indigenous.
The numbers are still preliminary, however, with the final totals to be shared early next month.
Jeff Keshen, the university’s president, said it’s great to see enrolment higher than it was prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in 2020.
“This remarkable achievement is a testament to the dedication of our faculty and staff who have helped make the U of R the institution of choice for students,” Keshen said in a statement.
He said the strong growth in student numbers reflects the school’s reputation as a safe and welcoming space for all students.
“These students bring new ways of knowing, experiences and world views that provide an enriched learning environment for all,” Keshen added.
The U of R saw 16,860 students registered in the fall semester, an all-time high for the institution.
