A 74-year-old man has been charged with sexual assault and assault with a weapon after an investigation into what police termed “a historical assault with faith-based affiliations” in Saskatoon.
Two sources have confirmed the man is Kenneth Schultz, the former principal and director of Legacy Christian Academy. He’s the fourth former employee of the school to face criminal charges.
A media release from the Saskatoon Police Service on Tuesday said they got a report in 2022 about the alleged incident. The police release said the victim and the accused knew each other through their affiliation with the institution.
After an investigation by the Saskatoon Police Service’s Interpersonal Violence Section, Schultz was charged. He turned himself in to police on Tuesday and is expected to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Aug. 21.
Former Legacy Christian Academy student Jennifer Beaudry said she knew Schultz for many years, and during that time he was closely tied to the reputation of the school’s affiliated church. She said she was happy to see the charges laid.
“It’s so relieving and validating, and empowering to see progress being made,” she said.
Beaudry said she expects more former staff members will be charged as the police investigation continues.
“This is definitely the beginning of a long road of charges coming,” she said.
