Estevan’s curling community has scored a deuce.
CurlSask announced Wednesday that both the 2023 Viterra Scotties provincial women’s curling championship and SaskTel Tankard men’s tournament are to be played at Affinity Place Arena in Estevan.
“We are thrilled to award this prestigious championship to Estevan,” CurlSask president Jim Wilson said in a media release. “Hosting this joint event is a wonderful opportunity for the host community to generate economic activity while watching Saskatchewan’s best teams compete for two provincial titles.”
The Viterra Scotties is to take place Jan. 25-29, with the winner to represent Saskatchewan at the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women’s championship event in Kamloops, B.C.
The SaskTel Tankard is to be contested from Feb. 1-5, with the champion moving on to the Tim Hortons Brier men’s championship tournament in London, Ont.
It will be the first time since the 2018 Tankard that Estevan will be the site of a provincial curling championship.
“The Estevan Curling Club is excited and honoured to host the 2023 Viterra Scotties and SaskTel Tankard curling championships,” Devon Fornwald, the president of the Estevan Curling Club and the chair of the host committee for the events, said in the release.
“We are planning an event that will enable the curlers to showcase their talents and skills and for the fans to have a great event experience. So come south for a winter holiday in 2023 and enjoy some southern hospitality.”
