Saskatoon emergency crews battled icy riverbank conditions to pull a man suffering from hypothermia and an injured officer to safety.
Just after 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon, officers were called to the east side of the river near Chief Mistawasis Bridge. A report of a man and a dog in the river created the need for assistance from the Police Air Support Unit, Saskatoon Fire Department and Medavie Health Services.
An attending officer injured his ankle in an attempt to assist the man, suffering from hypothermia.
Saskatoon police told 650 CKOM both the civilian and the officer are receiving treatment for their injuries in hospital as of Sunday evening.
The pathways down to the river were “extremely icy,” police said in a press release. Police added members are a “significant distance” from the injured man, and they had to carry him through the icy pathways.
The dog was successfully retrieved from the water, and police say he is “doing great.”
