The U of S Huskies are the top team in Canada when it comes to women’s basketball.
They took the national championship with an 82-64 win against the Brock Badgers on Sunday.
On Wednesday, fans gathered to congratulate them at a celebratory rally. It was held at Ron and Jane Graham Centre Court at the Physical Activities Complex, their home court.
Cheers erupted from the stands as the team came out wearing their gold medals and showing off the Bronze Baby, the championship trophy.
Head coach Lisa Thomaidis has plenty of basketball ahead with her duties as the coach of the Canadian national team, but she’s alright with taking the time to enjoy the win.
“For now, I’m going to sit back and enjoy this, celebrate it with these special student-athletes,” she said.
“It’s the best feeling ever.”
Fourth-year forward Summer Masikewich, a tournament all-star at the U-Sports Top 8, was equally enthusiastic.
“Just the amount of work we’ve put in as a team… it’s amazing. To be rewarded with the Bronze Baby is everything we wanted.”
Athletes from the Huskies wrestling and track teams were also honoured for gold medal performances.
