Regina Trades and Skills Centre students do free roofing work for single mom

It’s a win-win situation for people training to be roofers and a single mom in Regina.

On Monday and Tuesday students from the Regina Trades and Skills Centre were laying shingles getting the practical hands-on experience they need.

The home on the 1300 block of McIntosh is owned by a woman who works two to three jobs and might not otherwise be able to afford to pay.

The materials are provided by Wheatland Roofing, and Victoria Scudder with the company says they went one step further.

“We decided to bring our dump truck here and we took care of that cost for her so she has nothing to pay at the end of this,” she explained.

For the students, they get more than just the satisfaction that they did a good deed.

Brian Shankowsky is the executive director of Regina Trades and Skills Centre. He explains this act of charity gets them out of the classroom to get some real hands-on experience.

“We have simulated roofs at the shop and they have worked on them, but this is different with a couple of different peaks it gives them that real-life experience,” he maintained.

The project benefits both the centre and Wheatland to make connections between potential employees and employers.

For the homeowner in this case, she has saved somewhere between $6000 and $9000.
