The damage will be assessed in southwest Manitoba after a tornado hit an area near Tilston.
Storm chasers captured dramatic video and pictures Monday night of the twister and shared it to social media. Even the mayor of Virden, Jeff McConnell, tweeted to residents, “Take cover now please! I want to see you in the morning!”
Environment Canada meteorologist Mike McDonald called it a very strong tornado that started around 7:30 p.m. Saskatchewan time north of Pierson.
“And it was on the ground for two and a half to three hours. The last report we had of it was north of Virden. So it tracked northward, basically between communities, fortunately,” McDonald said.
Based on the reports Environment Canada has received so far, it wasn’t a very destructive tornado. However, more damage may be discovered Tuesday as daylight returns.
