While a concrete opening date hasn’t been announced, significant progress is being made on the new home for Huskies hockey in Saskatoon.
Merlis Belsher Place at the University of Saskatchewan is now 60 per cent complete, with the hockey boards and glass already installed in the two ice pads at the arena.
The $42.9-million facility is set to feature a main ice pad with an initial capacity of 2,614 seats, which will later be expanded to 3,546, along with a smaller ice pad for minor hockey. It will also host practice courts for Huskie basketball and volleyball, and have dressing rooms for the soccer teams.
A $2-million sport science and health research facility is also being added to the arena, thanks to a donation announced Thursday.
650 CKOM was given the opportunity to photograph the progress in the main arena and secondary ice pad.
