Battlefords RCMP were called to a residence on Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation, where a man pointed a firearm at two women after damaging a parked SUV, which he later used to drive away — without the consent of the owners.
The SUV was found on Battleford Road in front of a North Battleford business.
When police initiated a traffic stop by approaching the vehicle on foot, the driver exited and pointed a firearm at the police officer.
The news release said the 22-year-old from Lloydminster “attempted to discharge the firearm multiple times in the direction of the officer, but the firearm did not discharge.”
The man then entered the SUV and drove away at a high rate of speed while a woman who exited the passenger side was arrested on the scene.
RCMP said, “Officers followed the SUV, which was driving erratically – driving through ditches and over meridians – causing the vehicle to become disabled on Railway Avenue in North Battleford.”
After exiting the vehicle, the man harmed himself with a knife. He was arrested and medical aid was provided by officers for his serious injuries until EMS arrived and transported him to the hospital.
Inside the SUV was a loaded firearm.
“The reality is, this situation could have ended very differently. Pointing a firearm at anyone is an extremely serious and dangerous act. Thankfully, no one was injured by the firearm in this case, but it’s a stark reminder of the risks RCMP officers take every day to keep residents safe,” says Insp. Ryan How, the officer in charge of Battlefords RCMP.
“I am proud of all our officers who responded to this incident and their commitment to protecting the Battlefords detachment area.”
