Prince Albert’s Catholic community is in mourning following the loss of the city’s former bishop, Albert Thévenot
A letter on Monday from the city’s current bishop, Rev. Stephen A. Hero, confirmed Thévenot passed away from heart failure on Sunday at his home in Prince Albert. He was 79.

A member of the Missionaries of Africa since 1975 and ordained a priest in 1980, Thévenot served for many years in Tanzania and later held leadership roles on their general council in Rome.
Appointed as the sixth bishop of Prince Albert by Pope Benedict XVI, he was ordained bishop on August 6, 2008, and shepherded the diocese until his retirement 13 years later on March 25, 2021. At the time of his retirement, he was 75 years old.
Funeral arrangements are pending, but will take place after the celebration of Easter.
