Many economists have warned of significant economic impacts and rising prices due to the U.S. tariffs and the counter-tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods that Canada is set to impose on Tuesday. Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were expected to discuss the looming trade war in a call on Monday.
The premier joined the Evan Bray Show on Monday morning to share his thoughts on the tariffs. That interview can be heard here:
During his conversation with Bray, the premier said Trump’s announcement of tariffs over the weekend was “unfortunately not surprising,” but he warned of the economic hardships ahead for both nations as Canada prepares to impose tariffs of its own.
“If you live in North America, these are harmful to you,” Moe said.
“First, you’re going to feel them at the grocery store, at the fuel pumps. Second, we’re going to see job losses across North America – not just in Canada – but we’re going to see job losses across North America, and that is significant for each of us to think about as we advance our way through this conversation.”
Moe said he wants to see the tariffs removed on both sides of the border as soon as possible through a diplomatic approach.
“I’ve said all along, everything we do needs to be de-escalating the conversation around tariffs, not escalating it, because of the harm it brings to people that live on this continent,” Moe said.
