The Sask. seller of an unopened case of hockey cards is likely hoping to score on the rebound after a second auction.
The case of O-Pee-Chee hockey cards was discovered in a Saskatchewan home in January while it was being cleaned out.
It was first sold at auction in February for US$3.72 million, which is more than C$5 million. However that sale ended up falling through.
The case of cards was put up in another auction this week and sold on Thursday for US$2.52 million (C$3.57 million), including the buyer’s premium.
The case is from 1979, which was Wayne Gretzky’s rookie year, and it has been speculated that the case — which had 16 boxes of cards inside — could contain as many as 25 Gretzky rookie cards.
At the time of the first auction, Jason Simonds, the consignment director of sports for Heritage Auctions in the United States, said it was “probably the most important hockey set of all time”.
