Get ready for a temperature roller-coaster in Saskatchewan

Make sure your windshield washer fluid is topped up – you might need it this week.

Large parts of the province, including Regina and Saskatoon, are expecting a seesaw of temperatures this week.

In Saskatoon, temperatures are set to get to a high of 1 C on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the high is expected to drop down to -17 C, but by Friday the city will warm back up to 1 C.

Environment Canada said temperatures in Regina are set to get to a high of 0 C on Tuesday, the on Wednesday temperatures are expected to drop all the way down to a high -20 C, and by Friday things will warm back up again, with a high of -1 C.

Meteorologist Chris Stammers said there is a clipper system moving into the province over areas north of Regina.

“Kind of a roller-coaster right now, and looks like that will kind of stick around for the next week or two,” the meteorologist said.

Stammers said when a fast-moving clipper rolls through, it usually brings quick-changing temperatures with it.

“They have, typically, a warm front out ahead, and that kind of draws a southerly flow ahead of it, and that brings warm air northward,” he explained.

“Then, as the low-pressure system kind of tracks through, you have a cold front on the back side, and that that draws in cold air from the north, and it’s really that temperature gradient that drives these low-pressure systems.”

Even though temperatures will be up and down this week, Stammers said both Regina and Saskatoon should miss the brunt of the snow and freezing rain brought by the clipper.

“Saskatoon is going to get a little bit more than Regina, but most of the most of the heavy snow is going to stay to the north, kind of north of Prince Albert,” Stammers said.
