A 21-year-old Saskatchewan rodeo cowboy is making his debut at the Western Canadian Agribition in Regina.
Cassidy Cairns was born and raised on a small ranch near Maryfield and now lives in Oxbow. He competed in bullfighting on Tuesday and is competing in the ranch rodeo on Friday and Saturday.

Unfortunately, his Agribition bullfight didn’t go the way he was hoping, with the bull knocking him to the ground.
“Last night didn’t go as planned, but that’s just the way it goes sometimes,” he said. “I got roughed around a little bit, but I was still good.”
Despite the bumps and bruises, Cairns said he’s looking forward to the ranch rodeo competition, which includes skills he has been practising since he was a kid.
“I’ve roped my whole life, I’d rode my whole life, and I went to school for it, but the bullfighting side of it, I got introduced to it when I was in college, so I’ve been doing it for about two years now,” he explained.
He said this was his third BFO Freestyle Bullfighting competition.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “I’ve met a lot of cool people, and I’ve been to a lot of cool places with it.”
He said he is already teaching the ropes to his younger siblings so they can follow in his footsteps when they grow up.
The 53rd Agribition kicked off on Monday and runs through until Saturday.
The 2024 Maple Leaf Finals Rodeo runs from Wednesday to Saturday at the Brandt Centre, and tickets are available through the Agribtion website.
