Rural areas north of Swift Current have been the target of ongoing metal thefts from vehicles and farm homes.
Five reports were filed during July with the Swift Current Rural RCMP claiming radiators had been stolen from vehicles and farm equipment. The incidents happened in the RM of Swift Current, RM of Riverside, and at the Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park.
Further investigation has determined two vacant farm homes, where the radiators were taken, were also broken into, and copper piping was stolen.
“Swift Current Rural RCMP inform that thick, black smoke can be an indicator of copper pipe and copper wire theft. Thieves often melt products to extract copper before attempting to sell it,” a Sask RCMP spokesperson said.
RCMP were unable to provide the exact number of radiators taken across cases they’ve encountered but shared vacant farmyards appear to be the suspect’s target.
“To help prevent being a victim of radiator theft, Swift Current Rural RCMP advise members of the public to park their vehicles in a garage or outbuilding if one is available. If a building is not available, park your vehicle in a well-lit area that receives higher levels of traffic. Officers also remind the public to lock their vehicle, house, and garage.”
Swift Current Rural RCMP is continuing to investigate the series of thefts while trying to locate and identify the unknown individual or individuals involved.
Anyone with information on any of these incidents is asked to call 306-778-5550.
