The funds are in place and now the search begins to find a company to restore the Broadway Bridge.
During Wednesday’s city council meeting, a transfer of $3.1 million from other capital bridge projects was approved to repair the bridge that connects Broadway Avenue to 4th Avenue.
The needed upgrades include replacing asphalt, fixing joints, traffic barriers and major arches, and replacing the sidewalks.
Before the funding decision, the Bridge Major Repair Reserve (BMRR) was supplying $9.9 million of the cost but still faced a $3.1 million shortfall.
“Typically, the city does not proceed with tendering projects until full budget allocations have been approved,” the report presented to council stated. “Delaying the tendering process until after the 2025 contribution to the BMRR at budget could result in limited contractor availability and higher bids due to increased demand.”
“Such delays may cause cost overruns due to escalated material and labour costs as well as extending project timelines and disruption to city traffic, thereby adversely affecting local businesses,” it added.
The tender was approved by administration and now goes before council in October where it’s hoped a contract will be found and signed so construction can begin in the spring of 2025 and be completed by November.
If there is no tender by October 2025, the tender and project will be delayed until 2026 and risk costing more than what was initially budgeted.
