The semi driver who caused the Humboldt Broncos bus crash has been ordered to be deported back to his home country of India.
In April of 2018, Jaskirat Singh Sidhu drove through a stop sign near Tisdale in his semi and into the path of the bus carrying the SJHL team while the Broncos were heading to a playoff game in Nipawin. The crash left 16 people dead and 13 others injured.
Jaskirat Singh Sidhu was handed an eight-year sentence after pleading guilty to multiple counts of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm in relation to the crash which left 16 people dead and 13 others injured. He was granted day parole in 2022.
According to The Canadian Press, the decision was handed down Friday morning by the Immigration and Refugee Board in Calgary.
According to Sidhu’s lawyer, all that was required for the deportation was to prove that he’s not a Canadian citizen and has committed a serious crime. As Sidhu has permanent resident status rather than full citizenship, all the criteria were met.
His lawyer added that the process could still take some months or even years, and there are numerous other legal procedures still ahead.
Some of the families of those killed in the crash expressed forgiveness and supported Sidhu’s bid to stay in Canada, while others said he should be deported.
A permanent memorial has been planned for the site of the crash.
