Gary Vidal, who represents the Saskatchewan riding of Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River in the House of Commons, says he won’t seek re-election next year.
Vidal said the changing geography of the northern riding played a factor in the decision. In a statement, Vidal said the boundaries of the riding he has represented since 2019 “are changing very drastically for the next election.”
According to Vidal, after the boundaries change, he will no longer reside in the riding. While it’s not a legal requirement for MPs to live in the territory they represent, Vidal said it is a personal requirement for him, and a matter he feels very strongly about.
“Although this is not the outcome I anticipated, circumstances beyond the control of myself and my team have dictated that I move on after the next election,” Vidal wrote.

“Serving as a Member of Parliament for an incredible riding has been an honour and a privilege.”
The Conservative politician won the riding with more than 42 per cent of the vote in 2019, unseating incumbent Georgina Jolibois. He improved on those numbers in 2021 when he won 48.8 per cent of the votes in the riding.
Vidal, who hails from Meadow Lake, thanked all of those who helped with his time in politics, and noted that an open nomination will be held by the Conservative Party of Canada to determine who will run in the riding during the next federal election.
That election must take place on or before Oct. 20, 2025.
