Saskatoon student killed in high-speed crash on Taylor Street identified

New details have emerged after a high-speed crash on Taylor Street claimed the life of a teenager early on Sunday morning.

Sixteen-year-old Sheryaar Amir, a Grade 10 student at Evan Hardy Collegiate, was the passenger who was killed in the crash. Two other teens were sent to the hospital.

According to the Saskatoon Police Service, the driver was a 15-year-old boy who did not have a Class 5 driver’s licence, as the minimum age to obtain one in the province is 16.

The 2008 Honda Civic was traveling east in the 4200 block of Taylor Street near Weyakwin Drive when the car struck a pole at high speed and flipped over.

Police said driver impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash, and the investigation is continuing through the Saskatoon Police Service’s Major Crime Section.

Mahnoor Naeem, a friend of Amir’s, started a GoFundMe crowdfunding page to help with the family’s funeral costs and other expenses. Naeem said her family and Amir’s family share a close bond, as they immigrated to Canada from Pakistan together in 2012.

“He was a very kind, and obedient, loving person,” she said, adding that the loss has had an effect on Saskatoon’s Muslim community.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser had generated almost $22,000 in donations.
