The Alberta RCMP has laid sexual assault and sexual interference charges against a 31-year-old man who previously worked at two schools in Saskatoon.
Now, the Mounties are asking parents or guardians who are worried that their child may also have been involved with Brock Mackenzie Whalen to contact their local police.
On Thursday, the RCMP in McLennan, Alta., said it started an investigation into allegations of sexual offences against a youth in June of last year. Alberta’s Integrated Child Exploitation Unit, both Central and Western Alberta District (WAD) General Investigation Sections (GIS) and WAD Crime Reduction Unit also were involved.
A media release said the alleged offences took place while the youth was attending a school in the High Prairie School Division.
On Wednesday, Whalen — now a resident of Peace River, Alta. — was charged with two counts of luring a child and one count each of sexual assault, sexual interference, making sexually explicit material available to a child, and child exploitation.
According to the RCMP, Whalen did practicum work with Saskatoon Public Schools in 2013 and 2015 at Greystone Heights School and École College Park School. He also worked with the Lloydminster Public School Division in 2014, and has been employed by several school districts in Alberta.
Whalen was released on conditions after appearing before a justice of the peace. His next court date is set for March 18 in Peace River.
Anyone in Saskatchewan with information about the case is asked to call 310-RCMP to reach their local detachment or they can contact their local police. Information also can be submitted anonymously by calling Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
