Freezing rain over the weekend left Saskatoon’s streets and sidewalks icy on Monday morning.
According to the city, work crews were out on the roads over the weekend, and will continue to apply salt as needed in order to improve traction for drivers.
“City crews will be continuously monitoring conditions and applying salt as required to address potential icy conditions, focusing on high speed and high traffic streets, bridges, and intersections along priority streets,” the City of Saskatoon said in a statement issued Sunday.
“Salt is an effective tool to address icy conditions during mild winter temperatures.”
The city advised drivers to be aware of the conditions and leave extra stopping room if required. Drivers were also urged to watch out for yellow and blue flashing lights on road equipment.
CKOM reporter Shane Clausing was out on the roads Monday morning to keep tabs on conditions.
“The main roads were clear,” Clausing said, “but the residential roads were choppy, slippery and icy, making for treacherous driving and walking conditions.”
Meanwhile, Environment Canada issued fog warnings for the southeastern parts of Saskatchewan on Monday, warning that visibility could drop to zero.
