A 34-year-old man was allegedly caught with more than $2,000 in counterfeit cash when he was arrested for other crimes.
According to the Moose Jaw Police Service, officers tracked down and arrested a man who was wanted on active warrants for breaking and entering and possession of stolen property on Wednesday.
During a search of his vehicle, police said they found the phony cash, which included both Canadian and American bills.
Police said the cash included 17 American $100 bills, an American $50 bill, seven Canadian $20 bills, 10 Canadian $10 bills, and 13 Canadian $5 bills.
“The possession, use, and creation of counterfeit money is illegal in Canada,” Moose Jaw police said in a statement. “As a result of the seizure, the male has been charged with one count of Possession of Counterfeit Money.”
He’s set to appear in court next month, police said.
Police said fake bills have been turning up more frequently at local businesses recently, and encouraged businesses to “diligently check all bank notes.”
Some of the fake American bills featured in photos shared by police included the words “Prop copy” and “Replica,” while the Canadian notes appeared to contain writing in an Asian language.
Anyone who discovers counterfeit cash was advised to report it directly to police.
