A prisoner in Saskatoon Police Service cells had to be taken to hospital Sunday night after a cell door closed on his hand.
According to police, the man was arrested for public intoxication on 22nd Street West on Sunday evening.
The man was “assessed and cleared” by an on-duty paramedic in police cells, the police service said, but was “resistant to officer commands.”
A statement from police describes what happened next.
“When officers closed the cell door, the man reached his hand into the path of the closing door resulting in serious, non-life-threatening injuries to his fingers,” the police service said in a statement. “He was then transported to hospital by ambulance.”
Police didn’t describe the extent of the man’s injuries other than to say they were serious but not life-threatening.
