A 31-year-old man was arrested after allegedly breaking into a Saskatoon home and demanding money while wearing a mask and armed with a hatchet.
According to police, a senior citizen victim forced the intruder out at knifepoint.
Police said officers were called to a home on Mackie Crescent shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday.
“A 73-year-old male victim forced the suspect out of the home using a knife, causing minor injuries to the suspect,” police said in a statement.
“Prior to police arrival, the suspect fled with a small amount of cash and a purse. The victims did not receive any injuries.”
Officers quickly caught up with and arrested the suspect, whom police said was attempting to hide in a nearby home. The hatchet was also recovered.
“The suspect was believed to be under the influence of an intoxicant and was combative and aggressive towards police, paramedics and medical personnel in the hospital during and after transport,” police said. “He was taken to SPS Detention after being treated for a minor injury.”
The 31-year-old is now facing charges of breaking and entering, wearing a disguise to commit a crime, and breaching court conditions.
The 100 block of Mackie Crescent where the alleged home invasion took place was also the location of the city’s most recent homicide case, the ninth of 2023.
