For the 24th year, C95’s Radio Marathon for Breast Cancer Research will raise funds for a very important cause.
C95 host Shauna Foster said Thursday’s marathon will be an action-packed 12 hours with some great challenges this year, and major donations from organizations like Cameco.
Last year’s marathon raised $369,555.
One notable fundraiser for the event involves a toilet at Kindersley School, Foster explained, adding that in the last few years the school has come up with a “staggering” amount of money for the cause.
“It’s a flush for a donation, and they’ve got this big ol’ toilet that they sit (in) front of the school. It’s so kooky but it’s so cute,” Foster said. “The reason that we hear about these fun fundraisers is usually because there is a connection to someone who has had that diagnosis of breast cancer.”
According to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, and more than 760 women in the province will get that diagnosis this year.
Foster told 650 CKOM Morning Show host Mark Loshack that during previous marathons she met some women in their 20s and 30s battling breast cancer, and every year it’s shocking to see.
The funds raised will go to the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan to support local breast cancer research projects through Saskatchewan’s Cancer Agency.
Since its start, C95’s Radio Marathon has raised nearly $6 million for the cause.
The radio marathon runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lawson Heights Mall.
On Tuesday, the Cancer Foundation of Saskatchewan announced it will bring a new cancer screening bus that performs mammograms to women in 40 different rural and remote areas in Saskatchewan.
To date, the bus has served more than 250,000 women.
