A public inquiry into the death of an inmate at the Regional Psychiatric Centre is to begin next month.
According to the Ministry of Justice, 43-year-old Shane Cantre was found unresponsive in his cell at the Saskatoon facility on July 16, 2021.
“Centre staff and Emergency Medical Services responded, and lifesaving attempts were made, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased,” the ministry said.
The Coroner’s Act requires Saskatchewan’s chief coroner to hold an inquest whenever an inmate dies “unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.”
The inquest is set to begin Oct. 16 and run through Oct. 20 at the Travelodge Hotel in Saskatoon.
Coroner William Davern is set to preside over the inquiry.
