A social media post warning about drugged zip ties attached to the handles of car doors has been shared like wildfire in Saskatoon.
But the city’s police department said there haven’t been any calls or reports related to anything of the sort.
According to the social media post, which has been shared more than 3,000 times, a person working at a Saskatoon grocery store found a zip tie on her car door handle, and phoned the police.
According to the post, Saskatoon police officers removed the tie and tested it for drugs, only to find “it had a drug on it that will cause a person to pass out.”
Screenshots included in the post warned that these incidents were “happening all over Saskatoon” and urged readers to “pass the information on and be safe.”
The post’s author, a woman from Fort Qu’Appelle, said she found a zip tie on her own vehicle’s door handle in Saskatoon last weekend and counted herself lucky that she didn’t touch it.
A statement from the Saskatoon Police Service said officers are aware of the post, but no reports of incidents like the one described have been received.
“We understand the impact such posts have on the community and the concern they can cause but we would reassure community members that if a public safety risk of this nature did occur, we would inform them,” a police spokesperson said in an email.
“We have reached out to the person responsible for this post to gather more information and attempt to identify the original complainant.”
