Métis Nation–Saskatchewan is standing alongside the English River First Nation “with heavy hearts” in the wake of the northern community’s distressing discovery.
After spending two years searching with ground-penetrating radar, 83 possible unmarked graves have been located on a site near the former Beauval Indian Residential School.
“I would like to extend my personal condolences to the souls that have been lost, their families, and the survivors that have endured this tragedy,” Métis Nation–Saskatchewan vice-president Michelle LeClair said in a release from the organization.
LeClair said she and Métis Nation–Saskatchewan are offering prayers, support, resources and continued friendship to the community of English River First Nation, which she said is closely connected to the Métis community.
Children from First Nation and Métis families attended Beauval Indian Residential School until it closed in 1995.
Métis Nation–Saskatchewan has mobilized an emergency response team to offer support to anyone in need during this time, as well as emergency mental health services over the phone, available seven days a week, LeClair said.
LeClair said more than 15 northern Saskatchewan communities are impacted by this discovery, “and it is likely that every family in the north will be touched by this tragedy.”
