The Canada Day fireworks are set for Saturday, but Saskatoon saw some excitement in the sky on Friday as well.
Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the City of Saskatoon on Friday afternoon, as well as the RM of Corman Park, which surrounds the city. The warnings were cancelled shortly after, but not before the storm caused flash flooding and damaged trees in some parts of the city.
The city said power outages have been reported in College Park and Sutherland, but in both cases the cause has not yet been determined. The city said it did not yet have estimates for when power would be restored.
Thunderstorm warnings were also issued for the areas around Shaunavon, Maple Creek, Val Marie and the Cypress Hills.
Environment Canada issues warnings when storms are imminent or already happening.
Meanwhile, severe thunderstorm watches – which mean conditions are right for storms to develop – were in effect Friday for areas around Moose Jaw, Pense, Outlook, Watrous, Hanley, Swift Current, Kindersley, Rosetown and Biggar.
