There’s no reason for kids to be complaining about boredom this summer.
The City of Saskatoon is launching its free Summer Play Program Tuesday across 45 sites in Saskatoon. Summer play programs offer kids ages two to 12 the opportunity to spend time doing crafts, sports, water play and games throughout the day.
The program operates Mondays through Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Fridays from noon until 4:30 p.m. A select few operate on weekends as well.
The city asks that children under six years old have someone at least 12 years old watching them while they partake in the activities.
Saskatoon’s 10 youth centres are also welcoming kids this summer.
The youth centres offer many of the same activities as the Summer Play Program, including crafts, sports and games. They’re also a place for older kids to hang out with their friends while being supervised by leaders.
Youth centres are for kids 12 to 16 years old, and are open Mondays through Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Fridays from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Two centres in the city offer specialized programs for youths who are passionate about arts and sports. The youth centre in Nutana is art-based, while the one in Lakeview is sports-based.
The city is also sending a sports van to different parks throughout Saskatoon during the summer.
The sports van contains sports equipment and games, and a leader will drive to parks in the city and organize games for kids that are interested in dropping in.
Specific details on program locations and dates can be found on the City of Saskatoon’s website.
