The Saskatoon Food Bank could soon have a new home.
On its website, the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre said land has been purchased to construct a new food bank and warehouse near Avenue P and 17th Street in the city’s Pleasant Hill neighbourhood.
The plan is to build a brand-new two-storey structure to accommodate not only the warehouse and food bank, but also an office space, a greenhouse and classrooms for educational purposes.
The plan also noted that two existing buildings on the proposed site will be renovated to be included in the final design.
A schedule on the food bank’s RFQ (request for quote) states that a walk-through of the future site will happen at 9 a.m. on Friday.
The food bank has operated out of its current location on Avenue C South since 1990. Prior to that, the operation was run out of the basement of St. Thomas Wesley United Church.
It’s expected to take three months for the design process to get finalized, and construction is anticipated to take over 18 months. The food bank’s hope is the new location will be completed by no later than August 2025.
No initial project cost has been provided by the Saskatoon Food Bank. It’s not yet known where the money will come from, though a $2.5-million gift has come from Nutrien Ltd. to support the project.
When asked for comment, a food bank spokesperson said the organization wasn’t quite ready to speak publicly about the project yet.
