The summer weather always brings more visitors to Saskatoon’s Forestry Farm Park & Zoo, and this weekend visitors will be able to see the zoo’s brand-new small mammal house.
The new exhibit opens on Saturday in the former Children’s Zoo Building, which has been undergoing both interior and exterior renovations since last September.
Meerkats, African crested porcupines, sugar gliders, Goeldi’s monkeys and naked mole rats will be on display inside the new facility. The naked mole rats had to travel a long distance to arrive at their new home, according to zoo manager Jeff Mitchell.
“The naked mole rats came from another facility that was in the United States that was breeding them,” Mitchell explained.
“The meerkats and porcupines, we actually have them trained. Our staff works with them every day, so we could just open up a crate and ask them to go in it, and they would.”
Rattle and Shake, the African crested porcupines, will now be sharing their living space with the meerkats.
“When we were over in the other exhibit, we were able to do introductions with each other, and they were able to get to know each other and get to understand each other a little better,” said Mitchell.
“Not many facilities have animals sharing exhibits, and we wanted to show that different animals can get along with each other.”
The total cost of the project was approximately $850,000, with a $250,000 contribution coming from the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation.
