Saskatoon is gearing up to welcome runners from all over North America for the 45th annual Saskatchewan Marathon on Sunday.
The marathon is to begin at 7 a.m. and is to wrap around the Meewasin Valley, following the river.
“We have close to 350 volunteers coming out to help and we have a record number of close to 4,500 participants (who) have registered to run this year so we’re really excited,” race director Kim Ali told the 650 CKOM Morning Show.
The high number of participants for the marathon this year is largely due to the fact that this race is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon. The connection to the Boston Marathon has gained interest from runners all over North America.
Not everyone has to run the full marathon; there are options for all skill levels ranging from a two-kilometre run to the full 42.2km marathon. There is even a walking option available, as well as a race for kids to partake in.
However, Ali warns racers that the Saskatoon terrain may not always be as easy as people may think.
“We go up and down the river valley and if you’ve ever ridden a bike there, you know there’s some pretty steep inclines,” said Ali.
Currently, the air quality is being monitored for smoke from the nearby forest fires and its effect on lung health. Participants will be alerted if the smoke poses a threat to the marathon.
