The City of Martensville has broken ground on its new community recreation centre.
The $44.5-million facility will be built just west of the city, near Mierau Road and Range Road 3055. The brand-new centre will provide spaces for recreation and community and cultural gatherings in the region.
“Once complete, this recreational centre will include a regulation-size ice surface, a spectator seating area, a leisure ice surface, a full-sized indoor artificial turf facility, spectator lounges, an indoor rock climbing facility and an indoor playground,” said Don McMorris, Saskatchewan’s minister of government relations.
“This facility will also include multiple-purpose rooms available for community groups, culture groups and the public,” McMorris added.
The facility has received funding from both the Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan, and there’s a big push for community donations as well.
The City of Martensville and Martensville Community Recreation Project partnered to launch the “Lace ‘Em Up Campaign” in support of the new facility. The fundraising effort was launched in December of 2022 with a campaign goal of $4 million that is set to complete the centre’s community fundraising goal.
Ahlana Ehalt, co-chair of the campaign, said she was excited to announce that the effort has raised $3.5 million so far.
John Williams, CEO of Canwest, and his family donated the land for the facility to be built on, at a value of $3 million.
Wright Construction and aodbt architecture are managing all aspects of the design and the construction of the facility.
“Wright Construction is honoured to provide construction services for the Martensville Community Recreation Centre,” said company president Lorne Wright. “We are excited about the opportunities a facility like this will provide for the City of Martensville.”
It’s still unknown when the facility will be complete, but all the parties involved said they are making good progress.
