It hasn’t been the smoothest launch for Saskatoon’s organics program, but green cart pickups are to begin as planned Monday.
The program hit a snag at the last minute when Corman Park council rejected the facility where the organic waste was to be dumped and processed.
It left the waste temporarily homeless until an agreement was reached with Loraas to accept the materials at its facility north of Saskatoon.
The city said the contingency plan was pre-set in the contract with Green Prairie Environmental, which bears the responsibility for any service disruptions to the compost program.
With collections starting this month, residents will also notice a new fee of $6.73 on their utility bills.
Green cart collection will alternate biweekly with black cart collection. Residents can find out their collection dates by visiting the city’s website or downloading the city’s waste app.
The monthly fee covers collection of food and yard waste from your home, sorting and processing of material, providing cart maintenance and education, bylaw and program support.
