A 37-year-old man who allegedly tried to grab a Saskatoon police officer’s gun Tuesday was jolted with a Taser – and now he’s also facing charges.
According to police, the incident happened at about 2:15 p.m. in the 400 block of Fairmont Drive in the Fairhaven neighbourhood, where police were trying to arrest a 29-year-old man who was wanted for breaching conditions. That location is home to the Saskatoon Tribal Council’s Emergency Wellness Centre.
“As this was happening, a 37-year-old man approached and physically confronted the officers,” the police said in a media release. “A struggle ensued, which saw the 37-year-old man assault two officers and attempt to disarm one. As a result, a (conducted energy weapon) was successfully deployed and he was taken into custody.”
On Wednesday, police said the man had been charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer, and one count each of attempting to disarm a police officer and obstruction.
Police said the deployment of the CEW will be reviewed in accordance with department policy.
