Two teens are facing charges after what police are calling a “firearms incident” near a Saskatoon elementary school Friday.
According to police, officers were dispatched to a school on Sumner Crescent at about 9:30 p.m. after a report that a group of people had been shot at near the school. Police did not identify the specific school, but École St. Peter School is the only elementary school located on Sumner Crescent.
When the officers arrived, police said they spotted two teen boys walking through the attached park, and one of them was carrying a shotgun.
Both of them were arrested without incident, police said, and a search revealed the teens were carrying an airsoft gun and ammunition in addition to the shotgun.
“Following the investigation, it appears two separate parties had agreed on a prearranged altercation,” police said in a statement. “When they met, a foot chase ensued and a firearm was discharged but no one was injured. The party believed to be responsible for discharging the firearm is also said to have threatened someone with a gun.”
The two boys — aged 15 and 17 — are facing a total of 17 gun-related charges, police said, including discharging a firearm with intent.
The older of the two was also charged with breaching probation.
Because they are youths, the boys cannot be named.
