During the Christmas season, generous people around Saskatchewan packed more than 19,000 shoeboxes for children in need around the world.
That’s part of the grand total of 415,042 boxes filled across Canada in 2022 for the Operation Christmas Child campaign, which works to connect children in need with what might be the only gifts they’ll ever receive.
The boxes — filled with toys, hygiene items, clothing and school supplies — are already being distributed to children in Ukraine, the Philippines, Central America and western Africa, according to Frank King, media relations manager with Samaritan’s Purse.
Saskatchewan’s total included 3,526 boxes packed in Saskatoon, 2,399 in Regina, 1,203 in Warman, 1,000 in Martensville and 505 in Prince Albert.
Kendra Shields, Operation Christmas Child’s director, said the organization is grateful for the generosity of Canadians.
“These gift-filled shoeboxes are a tangible expression of God’s love and will provide joy and hope to children, many of whom have never received a gift before,” Shields said.
Boxes can be packed year-round using Samaritan’s Purse’s online option. The organization has been collecting and hand-delivering gift-filled shoeboxes since 1993.
