Saskatoon is closing in on choosing the location for a future downtown arena and event centre.
City council will discuss a recommendation by administration during a special meeting on Wednesday about choosing the Midtown Shopping Centre parking lot between First Avenue and Pacific Avenue as the spot for a possible new arena.
In a news release, the city said the site emerged as the clear winner over the north downtown site next to the police station with the highest score and ranking favourably in nearly every category.
Also supporting the recommendation were the more than 8,300 people and stakeholders who participated in the public survey between Aug. 30 and Oct. 3.
“Respondents identified key opportunities with the Midtown site to be its proximity to amenities, its ease of access due to its central location and the potential for increased activities in the downtown,” the release said.
“The survey results also identified some key challenges; most notably, parking availability and traffic congestion.”
According to administration, the 526 parking stalls currently in the north parking lot could be replaced with the construction of additional parking, while congestion would be addressed by the future Bus Rapid Transit which would link the entertainment district to the rest of the city.
