The Regina Red Sox will have a Regina man at the helm during the 2023 Western Canadian Baseball League.
Ben Komonosky takes over as manager from Jason Veyna, who informed the team at the end of the 2022 season that he wouldn’t be returning in 2023.
Komonosky is currently an assistant coach at Indiana State University.
Over the summer, he was the head coach and field manager of the Michigan Monarchs, who posted a Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League-best 23-15 overall record, won the North Division and reached the playoffs.
Komonosky played for the University of Evansville baseball team from 2018 to ’21 after beginning his collegiate career at North Iowa Area Community College.
He had a stint as a catcher with the Red Sox in the summer of 2019 after spending the 2018 WCBL season with the Swift Current 57’s.
Komonosky’s assistant coaches next season will be Mitch MacDonald, Ruddy Estrella and Cole Warken.
MacDonald’s previous 12 seasons with the Red Sox organization include five as a player, four as an assistant coach and three as manager.
Estrella pitched for the Red Sox in 2017 before serving as the team’s pitching coach in 2019 and 2022.
Warken’s playing career included three seasons in the WCBL with the Moose Jaw Miller Express. He’s currently the general manager of the Regina Red Sox Academy.
The team also announced Rye Pothakos will return for his eighth season as the team’s director of recruiting baseball operations.
