Parts of Saskatchewan will see high winds, some of which led to warnings being issued by Environment Canada on Wednesday morning.
The weather office says areas around Assiniboia, Gravelbourg, Estevan, and Weyburn are expected to see wind gusts of around 90 kilometres per hour.
Regina is expected to see winds reach speeds of 80 km/hr and Saskatoon could see an excess of 70 km/hr winds.
Environment Canada meteorologist Jason Knight said warnings are issued when wind speeds reach 90 km/hr.
“It always has been,” Knight said. “That’s been the number for a very long time.”
He said the concerns with these winds is loose objects being tossed about, as well as roof shingles, and powerlines could be affected as well.
Knight said the reason for the wind is due to a low-pressure system that has now stopped in Manitoba for the time being.
“The wind continues as the day warms up. We’re looking at the worst of the winds (Wednesday),” Knight said. “That low-pressure system is still hanging around so it will be windy again (Thursday) though not quite as bad.”
But the wind is expected to taper off after Thursday.
“The wind will calm down to that 20-30 km/hr range but we will stay in that cooler pattern throughout the rest of the week,” Knight said.
As winter gets closer, Knight said these types of systems will become more common.
But that first blast of winter isn’t expected to come for a bit yet.
“After this system in the short term, it’s not too bad — we will have fall-like weather and temperatures near normal with highs around 11 or 12 C,” Knight said. “But it does look like by next week it does warm up to fairly pleasant weather — highs around 18 or 19 degrees at least at the start of the week.
