A condo fire Thursday night in Saskatoon left two pets dead and caused an estimated $325,000 in damages.
According to the Saskatoon Fire Department, the people inside a third-floor condo unit on Kingsmere Boulevard were alerted to the blaze by a smoke alarm, but found the fire was already too large to fight with an extinguisher.
When firefighters arrived, the building was already evacuated thanks in part to police officers who were already at the scene, and smoke was coming from the condo window.
The fire was brought under control shortly before midnight.
“One dog was rescued by firefighters but two cats did not survive,” the fire department said in a statement.
The fire started in the unit’s bathroom and quickly spread, the fire department said.
Two units were badly damaged in the blaze, the fire department said, but the people displaced by the blaze have been “safely re-housed.”
No firefighters or residents were hurt.
