Saskatoon police are sharing scary details about a man’s death in their custody.
Officers responded to 5th Avenue North after getting several calls of a man who was screaming that someone was trying to kill him just before 1 a.m. on Saturday.
Witnesses say he was carrying a large butcher knife and a bottle of alcohol. The man ran away when police arrived and was found later on Queen Street with his face covered in blood.
Police say they were trying to figure out what had happened when the man became aggressive and confrontational. He started spitting blood at the officers, who believed the man was drunk or on drugs.
The man was arrested after a brief struggle. Paramedics were called to treat the man’s injuries.
They tried their best, but the man died on the way to the hospital.
Saskatoon police have asked Regina police to conduct an “independent, external investigation” into the circumstances surrounding the death. The province has also become involved and the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety will appoint an independent observer for the case.
