After a rash of catalytic converter thefts, an investigation by Saskatoon police has led to a total of nine arrests and a long list of criminal charges.
Catalytic converters, which help control exhaust emissions, are commonly stolen for the precious metals found inside.
According to SGI data, catalytic converter thefts have risen significantly in Saskatchewan in recent years, with 410 incidents reported so far in 2022 and 610 in 2021, compared to just 34 in 2020 and 29 in 2019. The estimated total loss incurred from those claims is nearly $2.3 million.
After seeing the rise in thefts in the spring, police began an investigation that included support from SGI. In March and April, eight people were arrested and collectively face 43 criminal charges including theft, mischief, possession of stolen property, and more.
On May 19, Saskatoon police searched a home on Central Avenue and a business on 60th Street West. Police seized 66 converters as a result of the two searches, and charged a 30-year-old Saskatoon man with possession of stolen property for the purpose of trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime.
